It\u2019s a cycle we all know, but is it actually serving your members, or just giving them an excuse to fade away when the Auckland rain sets in?<\/p>\n<p>I think it\u2019s time we call it. The traditional \u2018winter bulk\u2019 is dead. Or at least, it should be.<\/p>\n<h2>Why the Old Goals Don&#8217;t Stick<\/h2>\n<p>We know Kiwis are keen to get moving. Recent research shows a massive <strong>71% of New Zealanders set a fitness goal in 2025<\/strong>. Yet, we also know that gym attendance can take a nosedive during the cooler months. The same study found that the number one reason people fail to meet their goals is a simple lack of motivation.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018bulk and shred\u2019 cycle is inherently short-term and purely aesthetic. It\u2019s a narrow goal that, frankly, doesn\u2019t resonate with a huge portion of your members who just want to feel strong, capable, and healthy. When their only metric for success is the mirror or the scales, motivation can be incredibly fragile.<\/p>\n<h2>Shift the Goalposts: From Aesthetics to Athletics<\/h2>\n<p>So, what\u2019s the alternative? Instead of encouraging members to just \u201ceat more and lift heavy,\u201d what if we reframed winter as the ultimate season for building real, tangible capacity? It\u2019s about shifting the focus from <em>\u2018how do I look?\u2019<\/em> to <em>\u2018what can my body do?\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is where you, as a gym owner or manager, can make a huge difference to your member engagement in NZ. It&#8217;s about redefining what progress looks like.<\/p>\n<h3>Focus on Performance and Strength<\/h3>\n<p>Forget chasing a certain body weight. What about chasing a new deadlift PR? Or holding a handstand for 10 seconds? Or finally nailing a set of unassisted pull-ups?<\/p>\n<p>These are concrete, measurable goals that provide an incredible sense of achievement. Each session has a purpose, and progress is undeniable. This creates a powerful feedback loop that pure aesthetic training often lacks.<\/p>\n<h3>Focus on Skill Acquisition<\/h3>\n<p>Winter is the perfect time to go back to school, so to speak. You can build entire programmes around learning a new skill. Think kettlebell snatches, Olympic lifting technique, or mastering the Turkish get-up.<\/p>\n<p>I once had a client, a woman in her 40s, who was completely bored with her gym routine. She was on the verge of quitting. We ditched her old programme and set one single goal for winter: learn how to do a pistol squat. The change was immediate. She became obsessed, practising drills, working on her mobility, and celebrating tiny wins. And when members are intrinsically motivated, they show up. They stay. They bring their friends.
